Monday evening, August 7, saw the return of the annual Hiroshima Day observance in Hartford’s Riverside Park. The event was organized by local peace activists, many from the Connecticut Coalition for Peace and Justice. The event is designed to remember the only times that atomic age weaponry was used in war - the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the US military during WWII. Many of the speakers, including Professor Charlie Prewett, Rabbi Donna Berman, and organizer Joe Wasserman, discussed the increased relevance of the event, noting that both Democratic presidential frontrunners, Obama and Clinton, have recently made statements leaving the nuclear option on the table. The event began with a picnic and included musical performances by Bread and Roses, the Rosenblatt sisters, and Dawn Terese.
Bread and Roses sing “Down by the Riverside”
Allie and Julia Rosenblatt sing “Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream”
